Sex Ed by Pornography

Porn is now the most prominent sex educator for many young people and a very poor one at that. The lessons it is teaching are very problematic - about bodies, sexual health and development, pleasure, consent, gender, power and aggression.

However it cannot be ignored. It is everywhere and very influential. Young people have felt that porn has viewed the way they think about relationships. In some cases, it has impacted on some boys’ unrealistic view of sex, sexuality and what girls need, want and are happy to participate in sexually.

Young people need help from adults in their lives to help understand that porn is not reality.

  • Get young people to start thinking critically about what they are seeing
  • Talk to them about porn and the unrealistic image of sex, gender and relationships
  • Reassure them that you won’t be upset or be cross and if they are upset by something they see online to talk to you
